Boys Basketball
The boys Varsity Basketball team is coming off of a 5-19 season but with a strong performance in the VHSL 5C Regional Playoff. #10 seeded Clover Hill pulled off the upset against #7 Douglas Freeman. The Cavs were later defeated in the regional quarterfinal by #2 Highland Springs, who eventually made the state semifinal.
This season, the Cavaliers look to improve their record. Varsity Coach Scott McCandlish is eager to see how his hardworking team performs.
“I’m excited about this team’s possibilities,” McCandlish said. “They are a very talented group [they] work very hard. I’m excited to see how they do.”
After several of last season’s players departed, this squad faces a lack of experience at the highest level of high school basketball. However, McCandlish believes in his team nonetheless.
“You can’t really substitute experience,” McCandlish said. “[We are] committed to getting better and working hard to see how far it takes us. Cavs basketball looks to start their season with a win on Nov. 27, at home, against Monacan.”
Girls Basketball
Girls Varsity Basketball finished the 2022-2023 season 5-17. This season, improved results are expected. The team is headed by an extremely strong sophomore class. This talented group, led by Nia Evans, Josie and Abigail Frias, has been working on their skills all offseason. With a favorable schedule, they are ready to show the product of their off season efforts on full display. With the season opener on Nov. 28 against Monacan, Coach De’Cedric Loveless’ team is ready to create shockwaves around the Greater Richmond area.
Swim
Clover Hill Swim is coming off of an impressive 2022-2023 season. Last season saw them finishing 10th out of 38 teams at the VHSL Class 5 State Tournament. Top Swimmers such as: Tate Bupp, Spencer Campbell, Andrew Webster and Carter Hinton will be crucial to the success of this program.
This special group of swimmers has aspirations to compete for a top spot at the state meet. Junior Carter Hinton believes rest and enthusiasm could be the key to success this time around.
“[We need to] have more proper rest in between prelims (preliminary races) and finals because all of us got very little sleep, ” Hinton said. “[We lacked] energy at finals, everyone was very down, tired, and not very energetic.”
The opening meet of the 2023-2024 season is on Nov. 28, at SwimRVA.
Indoor Track
Returning state champions in the 4×8, Cavs Indoor Track are back and ready to give each workout and meet everything that they have. This team is highlighted by a very successful senior class consisting of: Caleb Wilcox, Andrew Hathoway, Andrew Ellingson, Weslie Rosenberg, Sean McCray, Torie Satterwhite and Nasir Crews.
This success is the result of immense work ethic and dedication. Senior Caleb Wilcox gives insight on their rigorous training regiment.
“We work ridiculously hard pretty much every indoor [season] even when it’s cold or [rainy],” Wilcox said. “We even did a workout in the snow a few times.”
This unit puts work in every day in every week, running Monday through Sunday, for a total of 60 miles in a typical week.
“We usually have two running workouts a week, a couple lifts a week, plyometric circuits, and [some of us] diet pretty hard,” Wilcox said.
Indoor track begins their season on Dec. 2, at St. Christopher, for the St. Christopher Invitational.
Wrestling
The 2022-2023 wrestling season had plenty of ups and downs. One of the several ups was two wrestlers qualifying for the state tournament, and an additional 4 wrestlers making it as alternates.
This year, the team has aspirations to have even more wrestlers compete in the state wrestling meet. Making it to state is no easy feat though, freshman Colton Eam attests to the process of spending time perfecting your craft.
“It’s [important to have] the motivation to want to make it to states,” Eam said. “A lot of people will go into the wrestling room and expect [that] if they just show up, they will make progress, you have to put in the extra work and always do your best.”
JV begins their season on Nov. 30 at Hermitage High School, while varsity’s first meet is on Dec. 6 at Thomas Dale High School.
