Mu Alpha Theta, Clover Hill’s math honor society, is a place for students to explore a passion for math. To join, you must have taken a trigonometry class and then apply at the beginning of the year after you have taken trigonometry.
“It is a community of people who enjoy learning,” senior and student officer Lauren Feral said, “it’s a place where I can be around like-minded people.”
Mu Alpha Theta engages in math-related games and activities in their meetings, as well as participating in math competitions. The honor society is run by 6 student officers as well as math teachers Jennifer Soldan and Katie Rose.
“We focus on the joy of mathematics and helping others enjoy math as well.”, Katie Rose said.
At meetings, the student officers will either create an activity for them to do, or they will complete past Virginia Math League problems together. At a recent meeting, they played an altered version of the popular game of Sudoku, where instead of filling the grid with numbers, they filled it with mathematical symbols.
“We’re interested in furthering our learning and also helping each other,” Lauren Feral said.
Mu Alpha Theta also offers tutoring to Algebra 1 students who may need extra assistance from their members. They do partake in competitions, such as the High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM), where they are required to answer a large issue with models and equations; however, the club is mainly a place to casually enjoy students’ interests in math.
