In 1784, James Armistead Lafayette was born into a life of slavery. Despite his beginnings as a slave in New Kent County, Virginia, Lafayette rose to become a key strategist and information gatherer for the American revolution.

During his life he worked through British ranks and gathered intelligence that proved significant in shaping the outcome of the American Revolution. His role as a double agent allowed him to move undetected within British camps, where he gained the trust of enemy officers and relayed critical information back to American commanders. Armistead’s intelligence reports played a significant role in several key battles, including the decisive Battle of Yorktown, where his contributions helped secure a crucial victory for the American forces.

Despite his enslaved status, Armistead’s bravery and resourcefulness were undeniable. His efforts in service of the American cause highlight the complexities of individuals who navigated the tumultuous terrain of revolution-era America, where ideals of freedom clashed with the realities of slavery.
