Kyle Remppies, a German teacher at Clover Hill, is a Veteran who served in the Army.
Remppies started his Army career in college at Radford University, where he did ROTC from 1983 to 1987. He served in the Army from 1987 to 2006, and was deployed to Fort Bliss, Texas and Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. He was also in command of an Army Reserve unit out in Salem, Virginia.
Remppies became a German teacher in 1991. He chose to teach German because the largest part of his family background is German, and he started taking it in eighth grade and also at Radford.
Remppies felt very proud and appreciated on Veterans day when he was celebrated along with other veterans on the Hill.
“I’m very happy to be recognized, and very happy that people still do recognize veterans,” Remppies said.
Growing up, Remppies was surrounded by military influence and that influenced him to want to be in the military.
“When I was growing up, all my toys were toy soldiers,” Remppies said. “I just really enjoyed the military, military history, my family members that were in the military, and, I just knew I had to be in the military.”
Remppies feels that becoming a teacher after serving in the Army was a smooth transition and that their roles were alike in many ways.
“I was an officer in the military, and I was kind of like a teacher too, a teacher and a leader, so they were kind of close in a lot of ways,” Remppies said.
Remppies’ military past has helped him become a very passionate and successful teacher!
