Every Wednesday morning before the school day begins, students gather for Cavaliers for Christ: a student-led club where they come together for fellowship, to share their faith, and build strong connections.
Sophomore Jessica Vimalathithan, a leader in the club, opened up about why it means so much to her.
“I really love the community that we have,” Vimalathithan said. “We get to strengthen our faith by talking to each other, learning more about the bible, and just having good fellowship.”
Being part of the club has had a big impact on Vimalathithan’s life.
“It has really opened me up to a community where I feel safe at school,” Vimalathithan said. “School and places in general aren’t always filled with the same ideas that Christ shows us, so being a part of Cavs for Christ and leading it has helped me get connected with teachers that make me feel safe and friends that I know I can trust and uplift me.”
Vimalathithan also loves the supportive nature of the group.
“We’re always there for each other,” she said. “We pick a [Bible] passage to really dive deep into and I just love the closeness and openness of it.”
For anyone thinking about joining, Vimalathithan encourages them to give it a try.
“If you’re curious about faith and don’t know where to start, this is a good place,” Vimalathithan said. “Since it’s student-led, it’s not as intimidating as going into a church and having a preacher up there preaching to somebody.”
Math teacher Brian Bumbalo, one of the Cavs for Christ sponsors, has seen that impact firsthand.
“I think just seeing all the students that are involved and how it’s been growing since I started attending, it’s really encouraging,” Bumbalo said. “They would kind of lead it all and then now they have like a group like a leadership group that does it and they kind of alternate.”
When asked why he chose to be a sponsor, Bumbalo said, “I think it’s important for those students here that are Christian to see that our teachers are supportive of that so they are not isolated.”
English teacher Wanda Kline has been the sponsor of Cavs for Christ from its very beginning. Even though he has not taught many of the students who attend the meetings, Bumbalo and Kline know that the club is making a difference.
“Talking with Mrs. Kline, we’ve seen a difference and we hear their stories and how Cavs for Christ has helped them as a group,” Bumbalo said.
And to anyone unsure about coming, his advice is simple: “I would just encourage them to come on out. Even if you’re not a Christian, it’s a great way to connect with other students. It’s all about fellowship and unity with other Christians,” Bumbalo said.
The club meets every Wednesday at 8 in the morning in room 423. For more information about changes in meeting times, listen to the morning announcements, and follow their Instagram @chhs_cavsforchrist.
