Following a 0-2 record to open the season, boys soccer defeated Manchester 3-2 on Tuesday, April 8, to achieve their first victory. The Cavs’ offense began to dominate, generating many chances in the first half, and with stellar defense from junior captain Alex Ellingson, and strong goalkeeping from freshman Trey Voglewede, Green and Gold picked up the win.
Throughout the duration of the game, Clover Hill’s midfielders controlled the middle of the park. Freshman Abdullah Toure and senior Chris Hedrick, both midfielders, came together to keep the ball on offense for a majority of the match.
Volgewede was pulled up for the first time from JV to play against the Lancers. Despite starting as a freshman and having to perform under high pressure, he was able to keep the Lancers out of the game and held out to finish the game 3-2.
“It was my first varsity game and we got the first win, so it felt really good,” Volgwede said.
Senior Spencer Jacocks believes that the team was able to play well together, which was the main reason that the Cavs were able to obtain the victory.
“We were able to play better as a team, connect passes, and dismantle their team,” said Jacocks.
With a promising rest of the season ahead, the Cavs are hopeful to finish with a winning record and make the region 5C playoffs to redeem themselves from last season.

I liked this article because it showed how the team worked hard to get their first win. The freshman goalie did a great job even though it was his first varsity game. The defense and midfield also played strong and helped the team stay in control. I think the quotes from the players made the story more interesting. I hope the team keeps winning more games this season.

I think the varsity soccer team did very well and had a good season, I know they can improve as long as they play as a team and keep making passes, and I think it’s great that a freshman can participate on the varsity team.
