A familiar tune is echoing through the halls of Clover Hill, the iconic Star Wars theme is now being used as a warning bell to help students get to class on time. The bell plays twice each passing period, once halfway through and again just before class begins.
The new addition has sparked conversation and even a few laughs especially from junior Ryder Bayliss.
“It’s interesting, some people were telling me when they had Altizer in middle school and he did the same thing,” Bayliss said. “It definitely makes things more exciting.”
Computer Science teacher, Brian Deleon, thinks the bell is very beneficial.
“I think the tardy bell has been very helpful, especially since students don’t have their phones, a lot of them don’t have watches, so it’s kind of a good push and a shove to remind them to get to class on time.” Deleon said.
Deleon also emphasizes the importance of punctuality for students.
“It sets the tone for the whole class really kind of just shows your prepared ready and your thoughts aren’t elsewhere,” Deleon said.
While not everyone believes the bell increases punctuality, many agree it adds character to the school day.
“I don’t think it helps students get to class any faster than anything would,” Bayliss said. “But it makes things more interesting.”
Junior Quintell Brown said the bell is a motivator to get to class on time for a lot of students, but that he feels called out when the bell rings and he is not in his class.
“It has helped me because I [be] late and when I hear the bell I’m like, time to go,” Brown said. “I personally don’t appreciate the bell because I do not like to be reminded how late I am.”
Freshman Jaimeson Shears sees room for improvement especially because the bell is repetitive, but still acknowledges the bell’s purpose.
“I mean it’s alright, it’s telling people to get to class and stuff, but they should have a variety of which ones,” Shears said. “Some people are still late to class but if it helps it helps I guess, so they don’t miss anything and can get good grades.”
Whether students like it or not, the bell seems to be doing its job, adding some fun while reminding students to be on time.
