Almost every senior has endured a specific type of burn out that is described as ‘senioritis’. To them, this procrastinative disease seems impossible to get over, but what if there was a cure?
A cure may be tricky to find because every senior has a different definition and idea to cure senioritis. Senior Matthew Wang says that some seniors will not let themselves succumb to senioritis. Even though many deal with the fatigue, there is still a significant amount of seniors who are keeping up with academics. Wang is one of those seniors who does not let his grades slip, even while combating senioritis.
“Personally, I would never allow myself to really fall into that typical pitfall of senioritis to that point where my classes would tank or my grades would become incomparable to what I usually get,” Wang said. “I have found myself not putting as much effort into my studies as I usually have been and it is just a result of the fact that I have been doing this for four years now and there is not much incentive to keep yourself one hundred percent on the grind.”
The question still stands, what is the cure to senioritis? When it comes to a cure for senioritis, it can look different for everyone, no matter how obscene it may be. For Wang, the cure to this fatigued disease is 5-hour Energy.
“I haven’t found a cure, but I have found my 5-hour Energy drinks that get me going, which is telling myself to lock in and focus,” Wang said.
Senioritis is such a difficult thing to combat, especially if a senior does not know what to do to get over it. Wang has his 5-hour Energy, but that may not work for every senior. Other seniors, including Senior Nitya Mirajkar, believes the cure is awareness of continuity in school work.
“I would say being aware that you’re still going to have to do work and still show up in college and after high school. That’s why it’s important to be consistent and not fall off your schedule your senior year because you’re just going to have to do it again next year,” Mirajkar said.
Surprisingly, there are a few select seniors who do not try to overcome the fatigueness. Some seniors have done the exact opposite of combating senioritis, but instead have embraced it. The senior duo Omar Acosta and Kaiden Webb have come to terms with the disease others have tried to get over.
“[Senioritis] It’s not a struggle, we lowkey choose to do it,” Acosta said. “If we didn’t have seat time, we probably would not be here right now.”
Seniors like Acosta and Webb believe that you have to do senioritis the ‘right way’. The only cure for the duo is having consequences such as seat time, no prom, and not being able to do a sport. More or so, they both have to have repercussions to get over senioritis.
“[The cure to senioritis is] your counselors and teachers, once they start speaking to you and saying you might not graduate, that’s the cure,” Acosta said.
“Especially when you can’t go to prom, do a sport, really when there is a punishment,” Webb said.
Overall, the cure to senioritis is depending on what gets a person motivated: 5-hour Energy, awareness, or repercussions. A senior who is struggling with senioritis should know that even thinking of wanting to get over the fatigue is a step in the right direction. Do not let stress take over senior year.
