The Math and Science (Math/Sci) Specialty Center makes up 23% of Clover Hill High School’s population, and this year’s incoming freshman class has increased in size compared to previous years.
Math/Sci is a specialized program created for students who wish to pursue a math and science related career in their future. The program helps these students get a head start and gives them many more opportunities to experience different careers in that area.
111 students make up the Math/Sci freshman class of 2029, as compared to last year’s freshmen class which began the year with 98 enrolled students and finalized with 92.
Math/Sci Coordinator, Nathanial Henry, stated that the reason for this year’s class acceptance increase was due to the search for a “sweet spot” with the amount of students in seats. He noted that the application process was not easier, though the grade cut off was lowered. The program was able to accept more students that are the best choice for the program due to the larger applicant pool.
Henry explained that the program’s focus on critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability is valuable far beyond math and science related fields. Students like freshmen Maya Watkins and Charlotte Sunshine agree, sharing that they chose the math and science program for the opportunities it provides to grow, explore, and prepare for their future careers.
“We want kids that are dedicated and committed to the center,” Henry said.
Henry emphasized that the skills students gain will serve them in any career path they choose. With the program’s largest freshmen class in the building, the Math and Science program is building a strong foundation of students ready to take on challenges and make an impact at Clover Hill.
