As Valentine’s Day arrived last month at Clover Hill, many students were left without one, so wondering what to do on such a lovely day, the library presented students an opportunity to go on a blind date with a book!
Assistant librarian Kathryn Bogdanowicz is the person behind the Blind Date with a book. She started the event for people who have hard times finding books to read, as they simply look at the cover’s appearance to choose a book.
“I am one of those kind of people that definitely judges books by its cover. A lot of times I pass up books because they’re kind of ugly, and I’m just not interested because of that,” Bogdanowicz said. “I have seen other people do something similar to Blind Date with a Book, but I wanted to judge the book purely on writing style.”
Bogdanowicz speaks about the prizes that Blind Date with a Book has to offer and the process of getting them. She says they include little things like candy, markers, and stickers.
“So basically every time you get a blind date, it comes with a little bookmark, so all you have to do is fill out the bookmark and there’s a pink jar. Let’s say you read the first chapter in. You’re like, I don’t like this book. You can just write, I didn’t like this book, but then you just put your name and your student ID. So then at the end of the month, I’ll draw five names from that jar. And those people will get different kinds of prizes. Some of them will be candy, some of them will be like, maybe markers or stickers or I don’t know,” Bogdanowicz said.
Bogdanowicz picks different things every year for blind dates for a book.
“I kind of picked things differently every year, one year, I just picked books that I liked, so this year, I picked books that have never been checked out within the past three years,” Bogdanowicz said. “Hopefully that means I know nobody’s read them. And so I figured it was a good way to kind of showcase some books that need some love.”
Blind Date with a Book lasted from February 1st till the 24th, but the books in the library are always ready to go for a date.
