Big innings prevail as Baseball shocks Manchester

Liam Stewart led the Cavs in hits, going 3-3 on Tuesday, as well as closing out the game on the mound in the seventh inning.

Preston Corbitt showed timely hitting on Tuesday afternoon, driving in five runs on two hits to lead the Cavaliers past a very competitive Manchester Lancers team, 10-5. Offensive rallies that resulted in eight runs over the first three innings proved to lead the Cavs to an upset win against the Lancers.

The Cavaliers grabbed an early three run lead in the first inning, as well as a matching score in the second inning, thanks to an RBI groundout by junior catcher Randy Richeson, an RBI walk by junior outfielder Liam Stewart and a two run double by junior pitcher Corbitt.

After Manchester scored two runs in the top of the third, the Cavs answered with two of their own. Again, Corbitt singled, adding two more RBIs to his total, but he was not done contributing on the offensive side of the ball. He hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning to score sophomore second baseman Carter Bercume. Also instrumental in that inning was junior third baseman Connor Powell, who doubled immediately after Bercume was hit by a pitch, putting both runners in scoring position.

Adding to his offensive performance, which won him the Cavalier Chronicle Player of the Game award for the second consecutive game, Corbitt earned the win for the Cavaliers. While he surrendered five runs on nine hits in his six innings on the mound, he also added seven strikeouts.

The Cavs got on the Lancers sophomore pitcher Donavan Jeffrey early, who allowed six runs on four hits in one inning of work to begin the game. Following Jeffrey’s exit, senior Christopher Solomita tossed five innings, allowing four more runs on eight hits.

The Green and Gold tallied 12 hits to Manchester’s nine hits in the game. Stewart, Powell, Bercume and Corbitt all collected multiple hits for the Cavaliers. Stewart led the Cavs in hits, going 3-3 at the plate.

The Cavs return to action against the Midlothian Trojans at Midlothian High School on May 4 at 5 p.m.
