To begin their 2025-2026 season, Theater on the Hill is heading up I-95 to the snow-dusted state of Maine, with the holiday rom-com, “Almost, Maine.”
Written by John Cariani, “Almost, Maine” is a romantic comedy that follows the love stories of nine potential couples all living in the same town. The story is told through vignettes rather than one long consecutive storyline making it a slightly different structure than years past. Drama teacher Carli Wilkerson expressed how she enjoyed organizing the play this year.
“It’s a sweet play. It’s different than what I’ve usually done, so I’ve been enjoying [it] because it’s a lot nicer and lighter to deal with,” Wilkerson said.
Especially compared to “The Giver,” last year’s play which was a little darker and more contemplative, “Almost, Maine” serves as a light hearted and sweet experience to usher in the holidays. The cast shared Wilkerson’s feelings about the change in the play’s direction compared to other years. One of the actors in the play, Daylen “Dee” Craig, who plays both Lendall and Randy, shared his feeling about the difference.
“It’s the first time we’ve done a show that has so much romantic interest in it. It has a bunch of couple-y stuff,” Craig said.
Expanding on the different feel of play, the cast also spoke about how the show being relationship centered will allow for a more tender experience for the audience.
Julia Herald, who plays Sandrine, spoke about the relational and story-telling aspect of the show.
“It’s really interesting, and it’s nice to do a play that’s so realistic. Expect a lot of emotion, as it’s a very emotional play,” Herald said. “[We do] everyday stories, but it’s told in a way that’s very emotional.”
Cavaliers and community members are encouraged to strap on their skis and stop by to see Theater on the Hill perform “Almost, Maine” not only to support the cavalier family, but to enjoy a night of comedy, heartbreak, and romance that is also full of holiday spirit. It is playing from Nov. 20-22 at 7 PM; tickets are $10 and will be sold at the door.
