Announcements:

The Champions Together Unified Track Team is looking for student volunteers. Practices will be on Thursdays starting this week. Interested students can visit room 229 for more information.

The manga “Demon Slayer” won the library’s manga vs. graphic novel March madness competition by receiving the most student votes in the final round. 

The library will host a poetry workshop every Wednesday this month that students can sign up. They are also holding a poetry contest where students can submit their work. The sign up sheet for the workshops and the information for the poetry contest are available in the library.

Principal John Phillips received his doctorate in education from Virginia Commonwealth University.

 

Last week:

The track and field team competed in the Run 804 Invitational meet at Varina High School against teams from all over Virginia on Saturday, April 8. The girls team placed fourth overall out of 22 teams and the boys placed twentieth out of the 24 teams. 

For the girls, freshman Malaysia Rasheed finished third and junior Torie Satterwhite finished seventh in the 100 meter dash with times of 12.97 and 13.23 seconds, respectively. The four by 100 meter relay team consisting of Satterwhite, Rasheed, freshman Kyra Williams and freshman Kara Harris placed second with a time of 50.80 seconds. Harris also finished first in the high jump with a height of 4 feet and 10 inches. Satterwhite also finished ninth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.93, while Williams and Rasheed earned fourth and fifth in the 200 meter dash with respective times of 26.47 and 26.58 seconds. Freshman Julianne Woo earned fifth place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:41.54 and ninth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:56.49.

For the boys, senior Chris Henry finished ninth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.59 seconds while junior Sean McCray finished eighteenth with a time of 11.79 seconds. Henry also finished tenth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.48 seconds, and freshman Nasir Williams took thirteenth in the same event in 23.60 seconds. Junior Andrew Hathaway earned fourth place in the 400 meter dash by finishing in 51.42 seconds. Freshman Josh Taylor earned points in the 3200 meter run by finishing in 10:11.

Monday (4/10):

The girls lacrosse teams will take on Glen Allen at home. The junior varsity team plays at 5:30 p.m. while varsity plays at 7 p.m. 

The boys lacrosse team will play against Glen Allen on the road. The game starts at 6 p.m. 

There will be a rehearsal for “Into the Woods” by Theatre on the Hill from 3-7 p.m. in the auditorium.

 

Tuesday (4/11):

Items for graduation will be available for pickup by seniors from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. 

The baseball teams have games against Powhatan. The junior varsity team will play on the road and the varsity team will play at home. Both games start at 5 p.m.

The softball teams will play against Powhatan. The junior varsity team will play on the road and the varsity team will play at home. Both games start at 5 p.m.

Cavs for Christ will meet before school in room 423. All are welcome to join.

The girls lacrosse teams will take on Monacan at home. The junior varsity team plays at 5:30 p.m. while varsity plays at 7 p.m. 

The boys lacrosse team will play against Monacan at field 10 at River City Sportsplex. Tickets are $8. The game starts at 6 p.m. 

The track and field team will compete in a quad meet at Highland Springs High School.

The track and field team will compete in a district meet.

There will be an Academy for the Arts Senior Showcase from 5-9 p.m. The opening reception for the showcase will be in the community room from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

The track and field team will send athletes to both the Bullis Bulldog Invitational in Potomac, Maryland and the South County Stallion Invitational in Lorton, Virginia.

In the community:

Chesterfield County will receive a $35000 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Economic Mobility and Opportunity program. The county was one of ten localities in the country chosen to receive the grant, and they will use it to increase upward economic mobility in Chesterfield.

Chesterfield County approved the budget for next year on Wednesday, April 5. It includes increases in salaries for county employees and a reduction in real estate taxes.
