Allies club is a space for queer kids to find comfort in community despite the rise in homophobia.
Senior Hazel Lair is on leadership for Allies Club to support queer kids at the school who might not have support otherwise. Every Friday during Cav Morning, Lair helps to bring students together.
Lots of queer people struggle to make friends or find a support system, especially at school.
“Allies Club is important because it creates a space for all the queer kids at the school who may not have anywhere else that they are accepted and where they are comfortable, so we can find people who we can rely on if anything happens or if we need somebody to talk to about things that most people would not be willing to listen about,” Lair said. “It’s really essential to have something like that there because we’ve lost some people and we shouldn’t have and I don’t want that to happen again.”
Every Thursday the members of the leadership gather to organize each meeting.
“We have a leadership meeting the day before each meeting where we discuss ideas for future meetings and plan the immediately next one … and then we actually have the meeting and I help to, you know, kind of tell everybody what’s going on, keep them all on track to whatever activity we’re going to do.”
Lair enjoys doing many things in their free time.
“I have a bunch of pet fish and I like to take care of my fish. I like gardening. I like drawing sometimes. I love listening to music. My favorite band is Femtanyl. Oh, and I like making kandi,” Lair said.
Lair participates in many activities at school.
“I’m the editor-in-chief for the school newsletter, The Cavalier Chronicle, which you should totally go read if you haven’t heard of it,” Lair said
This was their response in regards to what bugs they like.
“I love millipedes. I used to have a lot of pet millipedes. I still have some pet millipedes. I like isopods. I like roaches. I like mantids. I like… all the other ones also,” Lair said. “They’re so good. They’re so fun. I love wasps. That’s actually the real answer. My favorite is wasps. They’re my friends.”
