Clover Hill High School has decided to decrease the amount of spirit walks, starting this school year. This change caused confusion among students, as Clover Hill had a handful of spirit walks last year.
Spirit walks at Clover Hill include members of the band, chorus, sports teams, cheer team, and the Cavalettes. Additional groups are added depending on the time of year to represent prominent events in the spirit walk. Groups walk in a line one group behind another, the band plays music, and the cheer team says a hype chant. Spirit walks are typically held on days of home football games to increase school spirit, and get students excited. Sophomore cheerleader Maurina Ssegawa said she enjoys watching different groups of the school unite to celebrate and increase school spirit.
“My favorite part of spirit walks is watching the band, cheer, and dance come together to make something cool,” Ssegawa said.
Sophomore cheerleader Lyric Hogle notices that the quick exchanges made with peers is something else that some students appreciate during spirit walks as well.
“My favorite part about spirit walks is the interactions with other people while walking in the hallways,” Hogle said.
Most students disagree with the decision of cutting down the number of spirit walks because spirit walks are centered around creating a push for that night’s football game. More so, players of the football team are disappointed about the energy brought to the games this year, and they feel like games will not be as exciting anymore. Senior football player Julius Lewis feels as things will change because of this.
“We’re not gonna get the same vibes from the games anymore, it’s not that exciting anymore,” Lewis said.
It is unknown whether the number of spirit walks will increase in the future. Students can hope that after hearing feedback about this change, that spirit walks may become more prominent throughout the football season in the future
