Is Valentine’s Day still about love?

Valentine’s Day is once again in swing, and in honor of it coming around again we took a poll and asked 100 of our students at Clover Hill if they still think Valentines Day is an important holiday (yes) or if they thought it was oversaturated and unnecessary (no).

Our poll results conclude that 49 students voted yes, and 51 students voted no.

This debate is a really close call within Clover Hill High School. Some students believe that Valentines is a good holiday and should be celebrated, and others believe that it is an over-advertised sham.

Sophomore Donovan Oberlies shares his thoughts and opinions about Valentine’s Day.

“Obviously you should love people everyday, you should show love to people everyday. But it’s good that there’s a day to remind people to think about and show affection to people you love and appreciate,” Oberlies said.

Right when the new year begins, some places start selling Valentine’s day merchandise even long before New Years. You can find stores stocked to the brim with pretty pink and red packages of candy and gifts for your significant other. They want your attention nice and early to purchase their gifts with the most amount of time, but some people think it is that way for every holiday and the thought of it alone fills their hearts with joy.

Some students are very pro-valentines day and they seem to love everything about the holiday. Sophomore Lyric Hogle begins to share and express her adoration for the holiday.

“I love valentines day! Even when I’m not in a relationship at the time or don’t have a valentine. I just feel so happy for all the couples and love the vibe the holiday brings and gives off through the couples. I’m extra excited this year because I have a valentine. Everything about it makes me happy,” Hogle said.

On the other hand, others find themselves conflicted with modern valentines day and struggle to find its true purpose and meaning with all the over advertised love and the holiday as a whole. Sophomore Muhammad Farooq begins to explain his objecting thoughts on the holiday.

“It’s very exclusionary. It sucks when there’s a holiday that is just for people in a certain relationship status, it’s almost impossible to celebrate it when you’re single. I enjoyed it over the years where I was in a relationship and did have a valentine. I might try and get a valentine this year, but who knows.” Farooq said.

Make sure when you are buying or creating your gifts this Valentine’s Day that you remember to show love to the ones you care about every day!
