Did the 2000s Really Ever Leave?

Are the 2000s still among us? Vintage trends follow us everywhere, in clothing, music, partying, lingo, and art. Low rise jeans are back, teens prefer digital cameras rather than their phone cameras, and clothing brands are doubling back on previous styles from the 2000s.

Sophomore Allison Frias talks about her favorite trend from the 2000s, and what she wishes was still more popular from those years.

“My favorite trend is probably the scene style. I like the originality of the music, and the uniqueness, I wish people would sell and use records more, I also wish the McBling style would come back,” Frias said.

Diversity in style and an unapologetic attitude set the tone for the 2000s. There are many reasons why 2000s trends are coming back, the main reason being nostalgia. The majority of people participating in 2000s trends are teenagers and young adults. The reason being could be the perception of teens children had in the 2000s, life potentially being stress free, the sense of maximalism in the 2000s, and the unapologetic attitude exuding from people back then.

It also comes back to popular media in the 2000s: The Bling Ring, Bad Girls Club, Big Brother, Jersey Shore, etc. These shows and movies serve as time capsules of its era.

But with that unapologeticness comes controversy. The beauty standards that the 2000s held was a lot to say the least. Many people would be shamed about their weight, a big influence to this was the popularity of the modeling world and a show accompanying it, America’s Next Top Model. On this show, models would compete in modeling based competitions and get eliminated weekly, while unfortunately getting shamed by the judges and their housesmates.

Companies were less inclusive back then as well. It’s also pretty prevalent that in this time, sizing was done much differently than it is today. For example, a size three in Hollister jeans today would be anywhere in between a size 5-7 in the 2000s. It was often criticized to be above a 0/2 back then, because of the beauty standards which was normal at the time.

While people are very appreciative about the trends at the moment, history almost always repeats itself, with this being said it’s likely that decades later from now, teens will resume trends from the present time being now.
