On Oct. 24th, the Swift Creek Family YMCA hosted its annual “Trunk-or-Treat” where YMCA members and volunteers put together different themed car trunks with decorations and candy to hand out.
It is like regular trick-or-treating, but instead of houses in a neighborhood or two, there are car trunks following with many themes. Some trunks that stood out this year were a Christmas themed trunk, a trunk with scary blow-ups, skeletons, and smoke, and a Buc-ee’s trunk. Daniela Diaz, Executive Director of advancement at the YMCA, sees the event as positive for the community.
“I do think it brings joy to kids. Having different games for them and having candy or fidgets really fills their cup,” Diaz said.
Additionally, Luke Walls, Regional Director of youth development, thinks that the trunk-or-treat is rewarding not only for the community but for the people behind the event as well.
“I think my favorite part about the trunk-or-treat is watching all the kids come out in their cool costumes and just getting to see the joy on their faces,” Walls said.
“[The trunk-or-treat] is just [about] opening up to the community and building some fellowship. It’s always a real cool experience and very rewarding,” Walls said.
Diaz adds that she believes the event connects the overall community.
“I love seeing the community come together, I love [seeing] the parents pouring the time into their kids and walking around from car to car, [and] I love seeing the kids light up when it comes to the different types of cars,” Diaz said.
For the first time, a voting poll was open to the public and everyone who was there could vote on which trunk they thought was the best. The winning trunk’s owners received a $25 VISA gift card. Although it was close, the Christmas-themed trunk took home the prize.
Below is a gallery of some pictures taken at the event, including some kids costumes. Some costumes at the event worn by the children were Darth Vader, characters from KPop Demon Hunters, Michael Jackson, axolotls, corn, and more. Walls also adds that the experience is personally very rewarding for him.
