The Men’s Basketball team is preparing for a new season, with a focus on improvement and growth. Head coach Scott McCandlish says their goals aren’t just about wins and losses, but getting better every game.
“I just want to see improvement in growth from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. Not really going to put a win and loss total on it,” McCandlish said.
This season the team will have more depth, although 3 players graduated last year; Ian, Carter, and Jonathan. There will be 6 seniors returning and a great group of juniors, sophomores, and freshmen.
“This year, the roster has a little bit more depth, [13 players], a little bit more interchangeable. We have six seniors, and then we have three sophomores that show contributions a lot, and then obviously we have a handful of juniors that are as well,” McCandlish said.
McCandlish pointed to the team’s chemistry as being their best strength.
“Their togetherness. How tight of a unit they are. Just on the court, [and] off,” McCandlish said.
Senior Andrew Morin says the team is excited and confident heading into the new season, and the players are aiming to make it to the post season.
“[It] feels really good to start a new season. We feel like we can be really competitive this year and make a real big push, our biggest goal as a team is making the postseason,” Morin said.
He credits their summer and fall league play for building their chemistry as a team.
“I think playing as a team, there’s a lot of team chemistry. We’ve been playing in summer leagues, fall leagues, workouts all summer, all fall. So we really, we know how to play together,” Morin said.
The crowd during their first game against Powhatan really gave the team the energy and motivation they needed to get the win.
“That 1st game, it was a lot of fun to play in with the crowd there. Got us motivated and hyped, and it was a great atmosphere,” Morin said.

The Men’s Basketball team is on track for a successful year because they have focused on having a well-rounded team rather than one that is star-driven. Although the team lost three important graduates, Coach McCandlish points out that the current roster of 13 players is more nterchangeable which means that the team has more flexibility during games. This physical preparedness is combined with a strong emotional connection, which the players have developed by working hard in summer and fall leagues. Senior Andrew Morin points out that this “togetherness” has allowed the team to set its sights on a lofty postseason goal rather than simply improving from the previous year.
