The Richmond Spiders men’s lacrosse team have turned the 2026 season into a defining chapter in program history, rising to national prominence with a combination of consistency, hard defense, and clutch performances.
After defeating the Virginia Cavaliers in early March, Richmond climbed to the No. 1 spot in the national rankings for the first time. The Spiders backed up their ranking on the field, finishing the regular season 14-1, consistently holding opponents to single-digit scoring.
Led by Junior attackman Aidan O’Neil, the spiders offense averaged 16 goals per game, with O’Neil averaging 5 goals and assists per game.
Their dominance carried into important games, securing their second consecutive Atlantic 10 conference title, with an 8–6 win over the Saint Joseph’s Hawks. The Spiders’ disciplined playstyle shone, winning 53% of their faceoffs, and capitalizing on key possessions.
Statistically, Richmond ranked among the nation’s best in goals allowed per game holding teams to just 8.1 goals a game.
This historic run not only delivered trophies but also exceeded high expectations. Richmond is no longer a rising program; it’s now a powerhouse. The spiders hope to continue their historic season this Saturday against Duke in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
