Cavalier Medford basketball team pushing toward strong season finish

Clover Hill’s Medford basketball team is having a phenomenal season, with concluding games coming in the following weeks.

Led by Coach Gay, the Medford Basketball team has 24 players and competes with surrounding schools in the Medford Basketball League.

“The Medford Basketball League is a basketball league for our special ed. students that was started in the ’70s,” Gay said. “It’s grown and it includes all the schools in Chesterfield County now.”

Players throughout the program, such as Mia Alverez and Jessica Randall, have various reasons for participating, ranging from simple reasons, like being with their friends, to intense love for the sport.

“I think our friendship and how we play grew on me. Getting to know the others, to get along with others, it makes it special,” Regenal said.

The team has had a neutral record throughout the season, showing the talent of the players on the team.

“We always practice on Fridays,” Alvarez said. “We make sure we give good practice each and every day. This year’s been really stressful, but it’s been a good, good year.”

Coach Gay joined the team 11 seasons ago and has contributed to bringing the team to this point.

“I’ve always loved basketball,” Gay said. “I played basketball in high school. And when I came to work here, the guy who was coaching asked me to help him, and then he left the next year. I just sort of took over the team.”

The sport means many things to many people, but it means a special amount to some of the players on the team.

“For me, I always wanted to do sports,” Regenal said. “When I was in middle school, I started basketball and just kept on trying to get into it. Eventually, In high school, I made it.”

With the final few games of the season upcoming, Cavs carry high hopes for our concluding games.

“Thomas Dale is tough. They are really tough, and they beat us last year,” Gay said. “We do have the ability to beat them, but we’ll just have to see how we play today. I’m nervously excited.”

Clover Hill’s team is beyond our typical average, and according to Coach Gay, it iss doing phenomenal compared to past years.

“This year, [the team] is actually playing really well for me. We usually are sort of at the bottom of the barrel for all the teams, and this year we’re kind of towards the top of the barrel, which is still pretty good for us,” Gay said.

Cavs should keep their hopes high for our team as the season comes to a conclusion. There is a game every few weeks, so keep your eyes peeled and go out to support if you can!
