After being nominated by her coach, Junior Cate Gamache has been selected as Clover Hill’s April athlete of the month. She is in her third year playing womens lacrosse for the Cavaliers and is a first time captain. She is surprised, but glad to have been selected for the award.
“I wasn’t expecting that, but I’m glad that people recognized the effort that goes into lacrosse,” Gamache said.
She was lauded for her leadership on the field, and is grateful for the opportunity to be in a role where she can express it.
“I think it’s a good opportunity, but definitely comes with having to refrain from acting higher than I should, so I still know my place as not being the senior [while giving out] constructive criticism,” Gamache said.
Gamache and Senior captain Ava Graves take a role in the pregame rituals and lead on the field as well.
“Other than leading warm ups I would say, we call plays, especially Ava and I. We try to correct people or talk about what a good game strategy would be,” Gamache said.
Her position also gives her lots of responsibility on top of being a captain.
“I think it’s more being a middie, because in my position I have to go to attack and defense. With that and being a captain, I have to call plays for both sides and come up with a good game plan,” Gamache said.
While the state of the womens lacrosse team is in jeopardy for next year, Gamache is ready to take on a bigger role in her senior season.
“I don’t know if we will have a team. If we will, then I would definitely take my experience because a lot of people, especially those younger than me, this is their first year so I would lead by experience and what I’ve known high school lacrosse to be,” Gamache said.
One of her biggest achievements has been a red hot scoring streak since the second game of the season, and she hopes to keep it throughout the season.
“I hope so, that’s like my only goal each game, to score at least once,” Gamache said.
Gamache credits Graves for her abilities to lead the team and as a positive role model on the team for her.
“Ava takes another step than me by being a senior and knowing everyone else and having the top role. I’ve learned a lot from her, especially just looking at how she will lead the team through warmups and preparation for each game. I think she should have gotten athlete of the month over me, but I’ll take it,” Gamache said.
