The Cavalier Chronicle has selected senior Kara Harris, women’s track and field, as February Athlete of the Month. Kara successfully won 3 different events during regionals this season.

Kara was a leader on her track and field team. She continued to help all her teammates with different techniques, which helped them improve.

“I make sure everybody goes to practice and I try to help out when I can, especially because I do a lot of events,” Harris said.

Harris had to use her time wisely because of how many different events she was competing in. Her impressive scores in these events put her above many athletes.

“The events commonly overlap, so I have to run from one thing to another. Usually I just take an attempt, then I take a second, get ready for the next event, take an attempt there, and I just go back and forth that way,” Harris said.

Training to your best ability is the best way to get the outcomes you want during an event. She consistently trained as hard as she could every time she was out on the track.

“I really just practiced more technique rather than just reps, because technique is important. You can have a lot of bad reps, but once you get good technique, It really takes you to the next level,” Harris said.

Kara tried to ignore the pressure of regionals and keep her mind set on winning. Anything that did not work for her during the regular season she changed when she arrived at regionals.

“I took what I knew didn’t work from the regular season and applied it to regionals to change it and make it better,” Harris said.

The track and field coach helped Kara stay focused during the whole season. He set up drills for her on what he knew she needed to improve on. The specific drills she got to do on her own set her above other athletes.

“He really just set up a lot of drills for me to do, and basically, if I had to go from one area to another, he would already have it set up to cut down on the amount of time it would take, so that really helped me,” Harris said.

Kara had a great senior season for Clover Hill’s track and field team to finish off her high school career. She stood out and made her name one that Clover Hill will remember.
